Fecal Flotation Test for Parasite Detection
The fecal flotation test is a standard veterinary diagnostic tool used to identify internal parasites, including worms and protozoa, that reside within a host’s body. By detecting parasite eggs present in an animal’s stool, this test helps veterinarians diagnose and treat infections effectively.
How It Works:
Stool material is combined with a special solution that allows parasite eggs to float to the surface. These eggs are then collected onto a glass slide and examined under a microscope to identify the type of parasite based on the eggs’ appearance.
What the Test Detects:
- Worm-like parasites
- Protozoa (single-celled organisms)
Sample Requirements:
To perform the test, only a small, fresh stool sample (10-15g) is needed. The sample should be no more than 12 hours old and free from contaminants like grass, gravel. Your veterinarian may provide a container, or you can use any clean, dry Ziploc bag. Post the sample to our lab at: Bert House Stud, Bert Demesne, Athy, Co Kildare R14PO34. We recommend express post and if possible send on a Monday or Tuesday to allow for postal delays
Early detection through a fecal flotation test can help manage and treat parasitic infections, ensuring better health for your animal.
